House clearance. At first it sounds pretty scary, but just as we don't eat the whole cake all at once, but bites at a time, we don't have to unpack the "once this will be good for something" things that have accumulated over many years, in a single day.
Why is it healthy to get rid of unnecessary things? Because then we make room for the new. For example, when you look in the kitchen cabinet, you see that you have about eight mugs. You live in the belief that there is plenty, you don’t have to buy any. But when you make a coffee and reach out for the mug, you pick one that has its ears broken, it's not good, other is chipped, the third is cracked, you don't like the fourth because it's small…. and in the end you realize, that you only can use two of the eight mugs. Why do you keep the remaining six? They occupy place and give you the impression that you have something that you don’t really have...
For us women, the wardrobe of clothes and shoes is a sensitive area. Yep, I also have shoes that I wear once every two years if there is a special occasion and I tend to keep shoes too, but if they are uncomfortable or torn, I will relentlessly get rid of them. There should be rather one pair I wear rather than three, of which two are just ornaments, not serving their purpose.
The same is valid for the clothes. If we I don’t feel well wearing something, because it is uncomfortable, it creases so much that at noon I would rather take it off, iron it again, and later I just push it in the closet and I always choose something else. I collect these clothes from time to time and give them away. It took me many years to educate myself to have only clothes in my closet that are the proper size and I enjoy wearing them. I am not the person who runs to a clothes boutique on Black Friday to fill my closet with various things, just to own but never wear them. I can’t imagine anything worse, than to have a full wardrobe, where the T-shirts, skirts and everything are squeezed in, but then when I want to pick something, I just throw away one after the other, because they are not good for a reason, one is tight, the other uncomfortable, the cord disturbs… and so on.
It’s highly recommended to go through the apartment at least once a year to notice these seeming things and get rid of them. You think you have a mug, but in reality you don't. You think you have many clothes and you can wear something different each day for two weeks and there will be left something to choose from, but then it turns out it just looks like, because you don’t.
I just finished clearing out the clutter at home, couple of days ago. Yes, everything I considered unnecessary, was trashed. Mugs, plates, food boxes without a lid, empty jars that I collected because I wanted to try the canning, but I know I won’t have time for that. I still have kept my needlework because I take it out about once a year and knit a scarf or crochet a bookmark. They received a nice new box so they could be on hand, if I needed them. I also organized my documents, bound some official documents nicely, into folders by subject, but those I won’t need anymore - 10 years old bank statements, the result of a blood test from 2019, and similar things - all these were thrown away. I was surprised how much free space I had as a result. In fact, I also found things I completely forgot about, such as my very first feng shui notes, describing where my life is and what I want to change. It was interesting to read back from where I started seven years ago.
I was clearing out clutter. Old documents, notes, broken, chipped or not working things. It wasn't easy, because pretty much every second reminded me of something. Why I did this or that, why I bought this, who gave it as a gift…
In case you are still unable to get rid of an object, you still have to deal with the emotions and connections associated with it.
You don’t have to get rid of everything, proceed with what you find easy. If you can’t declutter now the coffee-stained mug you got from Grandma, put it back in the closet. This may not be the right time for that. By the time you finish, you will have around only the things you need and you can use because they work flawlessly. Also, when you look at a certain object, you have positive feelings, good memories come to your mind.
I must state in advance that you will NOT finish in two days. I just arranged the living room for two days and then the kitchen, the bathroom, the most delicate and particular areas.
Honestly, this is a hard job, you will be exhausted physically and emotionally, but you’ll feel better after that, I guarantee. You unload from your life what you no longer need and this way, new things, new energy can enter.
My very first house clearance took a week, I did it when the kids were on vacation with their grandparents. I wanted to throw out everything with no mercy, that wasn’t working, was broken, dirty but could not be cleaned, or when I looked at it, bad memories came to mind. I broke down and cried several times but I had to keep going because I felt that they hold me back.. If I remember correctly, I filled eight or nine large trash bags.
I tidied up like maybe never before. I lost five pounds and felt amazing in my body, as if I had been given extra energy to life.
